An Introduction to Sustainable Power

Fuel prices are on the rise. The price of petrol at the pumps has peaked to record highs, and some experts are warning that the record could be broken intermittently over the next eight years.

So it seems that high costs are going nowhere. And the current price of fuel is one very accountable effect of the decline in the world’s oil and fossil fuel reserves.

Not only are current energy systems harming the environment, then; they are also hitting consumers where it hurts. More than ever, the need for sustainable energy - and demand to have it implemented.

Renewable and sustainable power can reduce the price of energy consumption on a national and personal level; supply and demand dictates that - if the systems were fully implemented - sustainable energy would more than likely be sold at a cheaper price than current fuel prices, and those who install it for personal consumption can see money saved through energy saving itself.

So, as the government steps up its production of sustainable power - and families begin to develop similar systems for their own houses - it is important to know what types of energy are out there.

Here, then, is a brief introduction to the main types of sustainable and renewable energy.

Solar Power:

When most people think of sustainability, they think of solar power. It does exactly what it says on the tin; ‘photovoltaics’ - the most common method for gathering solar energy, and more commonly known as ’solar panels’ - absorbs solar rays from the sun, and convert them into electricity. So it is possible to light and heat your house with solar power.

Wind Power:

This, as you would expect, is less easy to install for individual houses. It converts wind into electricity through turbines, but it takes a number of turbines in unison to draw out substantial amounts of energy. It accounts for 19% of Denmark’s annual energy output, and also has a fairly substantial output in Portugal in Spain. That said, wind power currently only counts for 1% of the world’s total electricity usage. Plans for Europe’s largest wind farm have been granted approval, and is to be built in Scotland.

Bioenergy:

This takes various forms, but can generally speaking be characterised as energy that is converted from biological sources. So wood, manure or straw are all common raw materials for conversion into bioenergy. A sub-type of bioenergy is biofuel, which uses the same process, but has fuel rather than electricity as an end product. The same can be said for biogas, which breaks down the raw materials and is redistributed as gas.

There are other sustainable energy sources available, but these three are the main types, and they are the ones that most of the world’s governments have implemented, begun developing, or have plans to in the future.

So, with oil prices going up, and world governments looking to invest in sustainable power, get ready to swap coal plants for solar panels and oil depots for wind farms.

Equipping Your Home Office - Part 2

In Part 1 of this article we discussed how to select office furnishings and why making the right choices were crucial to your comfort and ability to remain organized. In Part 2 we will take a look at your basic home office equipment needs.

1. Computers

The type of computer that’s best for you depends upon the type of work that you do, and whether you spend all of your time in your home office, or go out on the road to meet clients. While there are a seemingly endless choice of makes and models, there are essentially only three basic choices.

For most home office situations, the desktop computer reigns supreme. However, if you are on the road a lot then you can find notebook computers with nearly the same horsepower as the best desktop. If you do choose a notebook, the consider one that has an available docking station. That way, when you are in your home office, you can easily use a standard keyboard, mouse, and monitor.

Even if you have a desktop or notebook, you might have room in your life for a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). PDAs, such as those from Palm Computing, can be a very valuable personal productivity tool especially if you need real-time access to your appointments, to-do lists, and phone numbers. With the growing popularity of wireless Internet access you can even use your PDA to connect to your home office computer no matter where you are.

2. Printers

Your first decision is what type of technology to go with –laser or ink jet. Laser printers use a toner cartridge/drum assembly while ink jets accept ink tank cartridges. Lasers are generally better for high-volume printing and have higher duty cycles–the manufacturer’s rating for the unit’s recommended monthly workload. Lasers also produce better-quality black text than most ink jets, though some ink-jet models rival low-end lasers.

Lasers are also faster than ink jets, but ink jets offer a lower cost model if you need to print in color. Color laser printers are still very expensive. Since the prices for laser and ink jets are so low, you could consider buying one of each.

Another important item to consider is resolution. A printer’s resolution determines the overall print quality of your documents. Resolution means the number of dots per inch that appear on the page as a horizontal and vertical measurement such as 600 x 600 dots-per-inch or dpi. A 600 x 600 dpi resolution produces adequate quality for most projects.

Your final deciding factor is speed. While printers rarely perform up to the manufacturer’s claims, you should still use the printer’s posted performance specifications as a guideline. An acceptable speed for personal laser printers is around 6 to 10 pages per minute. An acceptable range for ink jet printers is 4 ppm or above.

There are printers that do double, triple, or even quadruple duty as a fax, copier, and scanner as well. You should consider buying one of these models if you have a need for all of this equipment.

3. Internet access

Today you have a wide choice of Internet access protocols. If you access the Internet only to check your email, and browse the web a bit, then you might be able to get by with an inexpensive dial-up account. This type of access generally runs around $9.95 per month and up.

If constant, high-speed Internet access is a requirement for your home office business, then you need to step up to either Digital subscriber lines (DSL), or a cable modem. Both provide sufficient speed for any type of business that you are likely to run out of a home office.

DSL utilizes unused bandwidth on your existing telephone lines to provide a constant connection, while cable modems use your existing cable television network. DSL may not be available in your area. It depends upon your telephone company’s technology and how far you are from a DSL access point.

Cable, on the other hand, is available in all but the most remote markets. Still, if you can’t get either, then there is always the possibility of a satellite uplink. While this was considered extravagant only a few years ago, it’s affordable and no more trouble than installing a small dish antenna on your home and signing up for the service.

4. Telephones

No matter how high-tech your home office is, the telephone is still the most basic and essential of your business tools. Available features are at an all-time high and prices are at an all time low. Almost any home office phone on the market comes equipped with programmable speed-dial numbers, multiple-line capability, speakerphone operation, conference call capability, and headset jacks. In addition, your local phone company offers a wide array of add-on services such as called id, voice mail, flat-rate long distance and more.

If your work keeps you up and around your home office, or if you like to take business calls while out on your patio or while walking around your home, then a cordless phone is a joy to have. There are so many makes and models to choose from that it almost seems like you need a consultant to help you make the right choice. It’s not really that hard. Just keep the following in mind:

a) Choose the right technology

Avoid analog phones at all costs. Analog phones are susceptible to interference from other devices and range is very limited. Also, analog phones permit eavesdropping through baby monitors and other cordless phones.

Digital phones have greater range than analog phones plus they offer better call privacy through the use of random codes that scramble communications between handset and base unit.

Digital Spread Spectrum (DSS) is the best of breed for right now. The Spread Spectrum technology uses multiple channels and frequency hopping to thoroughly scramble communicate between the handset and base unit. You also get increased range due to decreased electrical interference, plus DSS phones are permitted to use more powerful transmitters.

b) Frequency

The range of your cordless phone also depends upon its assigned radio frequency. Most home office phones fall into three frequencies.

900 MHz: This is by far the worst choice. This frequency is crowded with devices such as baby monitors, pagers, and cell phones, and is subject to maximum interference. A 900-MHz phone has a range of around 1,500 feet and prices start at $20.

2.4 GHz: While once the best choice available, the 2.4-GHz spectrum is overrun with wireless networking, microwaves, and other devices. A 2.4-GHz phone has a range of 2,200 feet and pricing starts around $50.

5.8 GHz: This is the latest unlicensed spectrum available for wireless devices. Very few devices operate in this spectrum so there is a marked reduction in interference. A 5.8-GHz phone also boasts a range of around 2,200 feet and start at about $150.

c) Other considerations

Make sure that any phone you select has a headset jack, and then invest in a headset. There is nothing worse than cradling your phone on your shoulder while you consult your files or try to type something on your keyboard. A headset frees both hands while you talk.

Don’t forget to take a look at your potential phone’s battery life as well. Most cordless phones offer at least four hours of talk time and seven days of standby. Make sure that your phone uses replaceable battery packs, and that the battery packs are widely available.

One last thought. Cordless phones are useless without power, so always keep a regular corded phone handy for blackout emergencies.

In Summary

There is a lot more to equipping an efficient home office than first meets the eye. Hopefully this two-part series gets you going in the right direction. Chances are everything that you buy for your home office is tax deductible. Check with your accountant to be sure.

Home Business: Go Ahead and Start Yours Today

Starting a home business requires good strategy, consistent effort, and patience. Key Steps for beginning: research the market you hope to reach. Analyze what you have to offer. Find a niche that you can fill to provide your service, and be flexable enough to change your focus if the original idea doesn’t work.

Rely on skills you already have attained. Millions of dollars have been made by transforming a skill. For example, Colonel Sanders fried some ‘mighty good’ chicken; he turned that one skill into a multi-million dollar business!

Get your finances in order, but don’t be discouraged if you don’t have a ‘big’ budget. Many services, like Traffic Swarm offer ways to advertise simply by spending time and clicking on sites.

Very important that you focus on a Web site promotion campaign. Here are things to keep in mind: Learn where to publicize your home pages for free. Learn about the search engines, Meta tags, and key words. Use free banner advertising, traffic exchange programs, and list and directory resources. For example, Topica provides list directories you can explore.
Another place to promote is through a banner exchange company like SmartClicks offers free targeted advertising.

I’ve given you information on getting your home business noticed on the Internet. Many more resources are available. Once you get started ideas will come to you. Seek out a mentor to assist you on your business journey into the complex, exciting world of running your own home business.

Keep your goal in mind and dream about being succesful, Time is purposeful when you are investing it in your future.

Much success to you!

Doing Business in ‘Espana’

Staying at NH Aravaca Aparthotel was a perfect pit stop for me whilst on my long and arduous journey across Spain. I have stayed in varying levels of accommodation throughout my visit, but this hotel with its easy access from the M-40 made reaching the nearby business district easy to access.

I had many meetings to attend to during my stay and returning back each evening to an NH hotel really gave me time to recuperate in style before the next laborious day. I am a sales man you see so often my presence is unwelcome in a board room, I am shunned and made to feel alien by the people I approach. Their often gormless expressions and cynical glares really get me down. I discovered quite quickly that persistence alongside politeness is key if you are to ever finally succeed in getting beneath the skin of these suited and booted professionals who seem automatically programmed to say no.

One of the reasons that I am working such long days at the moment is I really need to get 10 companies to sign on the dotted line as it were. If I can secure 10 deals in the next two weeks I can expect a £4,000 bonus which will really help go towards those ridiculously expensive curtains Joanne wants to buy. Why did I marry a woman with such expensive tastes! The glorious Spanish weather and local food doesn’t enable me to stay miserable for long though, I can just feel that tomorrow is going to be the day, I close a deal!

The Computer Consulting Business: Overcoming Client Cost Concerns

The key to overcoming client cost concerns is to focus on value and return on investment (ROI), rather than expenses. While every one of your computer consulting business prospects and clients will have a different way of defining “expensive” and “affordable”, it’s crucial that you show how your proposed networking solution is anything but expensive.

Learn from Example

For example, a local insurance agency, with 11 employees and PCs, runs a combination of Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0, Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional and Microsoft Windows XP Professional desktop and notebook PCs. The agency is about to “hire” three new independent agents (pseudo or virtual employees).

Each agent currently gets their own analog modem line, modem, and ISP dial-up account once he or she has been with the company for at least 90 days. In the U.S., this means each agent will incur about $25/month for an analog line — plus message units.

Illustrate Costs to the Client

So with 40 hours/week of Internet access, this ratchets the cost of the analog line up to about $60/month. Then add around $20/month for a dial-up ISP account. So for these 14 agents and employees, your computer consulting business’ prospect spends upwards of $1,100/month for analog lines and dial-up ISP accounts.

If your computer consulting business prospect uses no other feature in your proposed networking solution besides centrally managed, shared, secure high-speed Internet access, the prospect’s networking investment would pay for itself within a matter of months.

Illustrate the Benefits to the Client

In addition, the prospect gains the benefits of a central point of control, administration, and monitoring over Internet usage.

So in reality, the prospect really can already “afford” your computer consulting business’ proposed networking solution as you’ve shown how consolidated Internet access will bring about a return on investment in a matter of months.

Work At Home Online Jobs - Be Your Own Boss

Did you ever watch the movie Shakes the Clown? Wow, cinematic brilliance. I’m a big fan. At least I was when I was in college; and it was pretty much par for the course to have a living room full friends that seemed the walking dead or the people on a public service announcement commercial than they did America’s leaders of tomorrow. And really not much has changed, so I’m sure I’m still down. Where I’m going with this is that even within the clown community there is a certain hierarchy within which you can be the kicker or the kickee. It makes me think that there’s really no community of (sub)culture that isn’t organized with this egalitarian antithetical ultimate end. Its unfortunate to be sure. God, even the Bolsheviks couldn’t resist their urge to prioritize.

Well, that leaves you with a choice. Where do you want to position yourself? A party clown or a mime? When it comes to working at home, the dilemma remains, but the strata fluidity puts socialist utopian fantasies to shame. It’s just a matter of decision and taking the appropriate steps. You can just as easily have a work at home internet job as you can have a work at home job of selling tiny, plastic Christmas knickknacks all year round.

It’s pretty clear where you want to be. First off, there’s the reality that this is a job that you’re going to have to do everyday and deal with whatever enjoyment or drudgery the position brings. And second though, you will inevitably meet others out there that also bring home the bacon in the comfort of their own squalor. At this point you will find yourself kicking or being kicked, probably more mentally than physically. Clearly the work at home internet job will offer social status that the other work at home jobs simply can’t compete with.

Hierarchies are inherently problematic and unjust, but while they’re here and while you’re working at home, get the internet job, condescend to all other work at homers and soak up the luxuries that only a party clown can understand.

Galadriel Anderson takes you by the hand on your trip to find a new job. Find out about business at home jobs and work at home online jobs.

Event Promotions: the Art of Writing Great Copy to Blast Out Your Supporters

Often, online event promotions take on a “frenzied” quality, and that’s because most events require a short burst of energy to hit the public with just the right timing. You may have astutely picked up that those who take charge of network group events develop an exclamatory quality to their communication which can actually be quite unnerving to those of us who don’t care to be hurried and hassled along.

So how is one supposed to make folks sit up and take notice of the Grand Event on such short notice, without coming across like a squawking chicken running around with its head cut off? And how does one get people to click that link without turning their website into a cacaphony of flashing lights, bells, whistles, all caps and urgent calls to action?

Why, it’s all in the copywriting, of course. And while some webmasters decide to just “opt out” of the copywriting process, the fact remains that no one’s going to click that link without a big incentive as to WHAT’S IN IT FOR THEM. I mean it, nobody gives a flying fig about that one little link among many other links, boxes, buttons and other distracting doo-hickeys propped here and there and everywhere on your page. I don’t care if you had tears of joy in your eyes as you typed the href line all full of good intentions… they WILL NOT click the link unless you give them a darned good reason why they should.

So the point that I’m making here, is that if you want to unleash a powerful promotional campaign on the web in a minimal amount of time, you are strongly advised to get a web copywriter who embodies the following characteristics:

1. Your copywriter must be aware of strategic keyword placement and categorical content as a mass traffic generator.

2. Your copywriter must be able to whip out those copywriting guns and blow your reader’s mind at a moment’s notice.

3. Your copywriter must be able to dive head-first into the mind of your target customer, extract exactly what that person wants, and then deliver the dream by way of your website’s written message.

4. Your copywriter must have a gift for crafting a message that’s organized, magnetic, and includes a strong call to action.

5. Your copywriter must instinctively know how to “switch it up” depending on which audience you’re addressing at which time.*

6. Your copywriter must be diligent in building your brand in every single piece of communication you send out there!

Accept nothing less.

*Did you know that in Online Event Promotion, you’re looking at two very different target groups, each of which requires his own special “language” and emotional incentive to act? Your first group is your event participants, and your second group is your event’s spectators and attendants. Your email campaign must be custom-tailored to each of those groups, and this requires the fancy footwork of a talented perspective-hopper! Look to a seasoned copywriter who’s up for the challenge.

Wouldn’t you love it if your online event became the season’s biggest sensation? How do you think you’d feel if suddenly folks started treating you as a respected thought leader in your field?

Your copywriter can make that happen for you… that is, if you find that perfect one. :)

When Was the Last Time You Referred a Website to a Friend?

It’s strange. Most webmasters work extremely hard to promote their websites on the Internet. You have probably worked day and night optimizing your pages for the search engines. You have probably spent countless amounts of money on Pay Per Click advertising and Internet marketing consulting.

Yet in the end there are hardly any results. For some reason nobody seems to care about your website.

Did you realize that most Internet marketers are probably working backwards? It’s like watching a home constructor try to put up the walls before the foundation is even laid.

Ask yourself this one question: “When was the Last Time You Referred a Website to a Friend?”

That may seem like an odd question, but think about in anyway. Was it Google? Or perhaps HomeStarRunner.com? Or another website?

Now ask yourself why you referred those websites to your friends. Back in the day when Google was starting to become popular I didn’t hear about it from a TV commercial or from a newspaper ad. I heard about it from my friends.

In fact, if you think about it, most good websites that you know of probably weren’t found by searching for them. You probably had a friend or colleague tell you about the website.

So what makes these websites so shareable? Why would you refer these websites to others?

It is simply because of content.

So ask yourself this question: “Is your website shareable?” There are several components of a website that makes it shareable. I will list a few here.

1. Entertaining Content.

If your website has content that will make browsers laugh then you probably have a shareable website. I don’t think anybody would mind coming across a website that was cleverly funny in any way.

2. Useful Content.

Is your content useful? Or do you write articles just so that you will have more pages for the search engines and for the article directories? The truth is that most content on the Internet is not even created for people! How can anybody expect somebody to really want to stay at a website that was created for a search engine spider?

3. Free Content.

A lot of webmasters are afraid to give any information away for free. They think that any knowledge should be packaged up into an e-book and sold. While there is nothing wrong with doing this, you must be willing to openly give out free content. Otherwise most people will not stick around in anticipation of your next e-book.

4. Well-Formatted Content.

While having a well-designed website won’t guarantee you success, by having a slick design that makes your content readable (or useable depending on your website) you will help keep even more visitors. Choosing a blue background with yellow text might not be the best idea if you have a lot of articles for your visitors to read.

In the end you need to take a look at your website as if you were a visitor and not a search engine. If you were to find your website today without any prior knowledge of it, would you stick around to read more? And better yet, would you refer it to a friend?

If the answer is no, then you have some work to do…

Managing Your Time In Your New Home Based Business

If you are just transitioning from working outside the home to working from home, your thoughts are probably spinning with all the things that you will get done now that you don’t have to waste all that time commuting, getting ready for work, etc. And then a few weeks into your new lifestyle, things just don’t seem to going along as smoothly as you had imagined! What the heck happened, anyway? Well, I certainly hope you didn’t toss that daily planner you used to fill out so religiously! You just might need to pull it out, dust it off, and put it back to work.

In the first place, you are “still working.” You are just working “here” and not “there.” You still need to keep a schedule, and maybe even a daily flow chart. It will just have different items on it. Instead of dealing with meetings, phone calls, reports, face-to-face chats with clients or customers or employees or “the boss,” deadlines, “managing by walking around,” countless interruptions, and all that, you will need to schedule time for focusing on the work you are doing from home, maintaining your home itself, your family, and maybe even YOU!

Take your planner out and come up with something that works for you. You might start with what worked before. In other words, if you had to be ready to leave the house by 7:00 AM, before, then be that way now. You don’t have to be “all dressed up with nowhere to go,” but you can be showered and dressed, etc. Assign times to focus on various activities, keeping in mind that none of this is etched in stone. Build your own individual situation into this, and remember that it is only a guideline. Your boss is not going to call you on the carpet if the schedule doesn’t work unless you stand in front of the mirror and have at it! Remember that you have flexibility that you didn’t have when you were working outside the home. You are the boss and you can arrange you day as you choose, to fit the needs of your family, health, interests, schooling, or whatever reason you chose to work at home. Keep adjusting until you find what works. It may need “re-tweaking” when school starts up or lets out, as days get longer or shorter, as the seasons change, etc. That’s OK!

If you are thinking, “but I quit work so I didn’t have to be scheduled!” remember that this is YOUR schedule, not someone else’s. You can take as many breaks as you need, and you can take them whenever you need them, not when you are told to go. You are working into the schedule YOUR needs and your family’s needs, not the needs of the company for whom you used to work. Because you have control over what is happening instead of being at the mercy of someone else, you can handle it!

And one last thing: you will never, ever have to come home so exhausted that you stand at the kitchen sink in your coat and high heels doing dishes because you know that if you stop to take them off, you will never get up to get the dishes done. And yes, I actually heard of some poor soul who did that.
